Why clouds are white and dark?

 

Colour of the clouds depends on size and number of particles with which cloud is made of:

1) If cloud contains only a small amount of droplets and ice crystals, sunlight penetrates it easily and scattered. We percieve it as white.

2) If cloud(like rain cloud) contains high amount of heavy water droplets with larger size due to condensation, little light penetrates it. Further, all the light enters is scattered out and we percieve it as dark.
